So, Monday is a loan translation of the Latin \u2018dies lunae\u2019, which means \u2018day of Luna\u2019, because this day is dedicated to the Roman moon goddess Luna.<\/p>\n<p>In isiXhosa, each day of the week is linked to a specific meaning. The first day of the week in isiXhosa, \u2018uMvulo\u2019, is derived from the verb \u2018-vula\u2019, which means \u2018to open\u2019. In other words, Monday is the day opening the week.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\" ><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row type_default valign_top\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-6 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\" ><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><strong>uLwesibini (The second day)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The amaXhosa also use the seven-day week, however, unlike in Afrikaans or English, they derive the words for Tuesday to Friday from numerals. We use the numeral \u2018-hlanu\u2019, which means \u2018five\u2019 in isiXhosa, to get to \u2018uLwesihlanu\u2019 \u2013 the Xhosa word for Friday.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\" ><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row type_default valign_top\"><div class=\"vc_col-sm-6 wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\" ><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><strong>uMgqibelo (The day ending the week)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the seven-day calendar Sunday marks the end of the week. However, in isiXhosa, Saturday is considered the last day of the week or the day that ends or closes the week.
