Although academic language is no-one\u2019s mother tongue, you could get by very well once you\u2019ve learnt its ins and outs.<\/p>\n<p>We assist students to get there, in many different language-related ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We present credit-bearing <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=110\"><strong>academic literacies modules<\/strong><\/a> in seven of the University\u2019s 10 faculties to equip our students for strategic communication \u2013 in an academic setting and in their occupation and industry. Modules focus on professional, business and scientific communication, writing skills and skills for academic discourse.<\/li>\n<li>We provide real-time <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=96\"><strong>interpreting<\/strong><\/a> in lectures \u2013 in Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa or South African Sign Language.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve created a safe space to discuss one\u2019s writing with a trained writing consultant at our <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=240\"><strong>Writing Lab<\/strong><\/a>, as well as opportunities to create writing support groups, take part in writing marathons, or attend workshops on writing research proposals, literature reviews, journal articles or other academic writing.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve established a <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=1041\"><strong>Reading Lab<\/strong><\/a> that offers workshops, consultations and a visual cognitive processing program to optimise reading.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019ve built a <strong>trilingual terminology tool<\/strong> for subject terminology in Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa \u2013 try it out <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre-terminologies\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We present various courses to local and international students aimed at either enhancing skills in a language or acquiring a new language, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=1205\"><strong>English for Academic Purposes <\/strong><strong>Programme<\/strong> (EAP)<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=1205\"><strong>Intensive English Programme<\/strong> (IEP),<\/a> or tailored <strong>Afrikaans <\/strong>and <strong>isiXhosa<\/strong> We even have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=116\"><strong>Language Learning Hub <\/strong><\/a>for social language learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Language Centre also casts its language and communication assistance net wider than the student community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We offer an <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=94\"><strong>editing and translation service<\/strong><\/a> in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, and we translate into more than 12 other languages. Our services are available to the University, corporate clients and individuals, and we can edit and translate any document \u2013 from letters, reports, journal articles and advertisement copy to informed consent forms. In addition, we do transcriptions.<\/li>\n<li>We provide an <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=96\"><strong>interpreting service<\/strong><\/a> at meetings or conferences. We work in Afrikaans, English, isiXhosa and German, but you could speak to us about other language combinations too.<\/li>\n<li>We offer <strong>language courses<\/strong> aimed at individuals or groups who would like to learn <strong>isiXhosa <\/strong>or <strong>Afrikaans<\/strong>, or prepare themselves for the <strong>International English Language Testing System<\/strong> <strong>(IELTS) exam<\/strong>, or who wish to gain the skills to teach <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=138\"><strong>English as a foreign language (TEFL)<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>We also present superbly crafted <a href=\"http:\/\/www0.sun.ac.za\/languagecentre\/?page_id=84\"><strong>corporate communication short courses<\/strong><\/a> through our Comms Lab. Think: effective office documentation, report writing, writing for the media, or crafting confident presentations, to name but a few possibilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For us, language creates a transformational space that has the power to change lives, inform policy and unite people.
